The Kowalchyk Garden was created by two grandparents, Nancy and the late Norbert Kowalchyk. In 1992, the couple joined the local daylily society, COHS. As the love of daylilies grew, the couple planted a huge daylily garden full of all types of colors, forms, and sizes. The couple joined ADS in 1999, and quickly became Exhibition Judges. Norbert loved to show daylilies and won daylily shows in Oklahoma City, several times, especially with one his favorite cultivars, Little Greenie. Unfortunately, Norbert passed away in 2005, leaving the garden to his wife, Nancy. In 2001, Michael came into the lives of Norbert and Nancy, and of course, he was ensnared by the love of daylilies, attending daylily society meetings since he was six months old, his grandma tells him. In 2010, Michael became an active member of COHS and participated in many club activities. Nancy and Michael love floral design, and are both National Garden Clubs Inc. Flower Show Judges, with Michael winning his first design division in 2005 at the age of four. In 2015, Michael became an ADS Exhibition Judge and is currently working on attaining his Exhibition Instructor Status. Michael and Nancy are also Garden/Exhibition Judges with the American Iris Society as well. They are both active in several other garden clubs in Oklahoma City, with Michael currently serving as President of the Oklahoma Iris Society, President-elect of the Oklahoma City Council of Garden Clubs, Vice President of the Norman Area Iris Society, 1st Vice President of the Central Oklahoma Daylily Society, and the ADS Region 11 Webmaster. Michael also serves COHS as the Daylily Show Chair, Publicity Chair, and a co-chair of the 2024 Daylily Convention. Michael also is the social media/webmaster chair for all six garden clubs he is a member of. The Kowalchyk Garden features 500+ daylilies of all different forms, colors, and sizes, especially doubles. Visitors will also see the Kowalchyk's OZ Daylily Collection, spread throughout the beds. The Kowalchyk Garden also features seedlings of Michael Kowalchyk and of the Chris Vizvarie and of the late Norbert Kowalchyk.
